Wait on the LORD: be of good courage,
and he shall strengthen thine heart;
wait, I say, on the LORD.

The Prayers of Jesus 2/12/2009
Lord, Bind Us Together In Love

KJV Psalm 5:3 My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O LORD; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up.
KJV Psalm 85:8 I will hear what God the LORD will speak: for he will speak peace unto his people, and to his saints: but let them not turn again to folly.

Last Sunday during Sunday School a question was asked, "What does it mean to pray?" After a short while a young child raised her hand and said: "It is talking to and hearing from God." Wow!

That answer which came from the child so well answered the question that was asked that the elder who asked the question was noticeably taken aback at the reply as were the rest of us who were listening. Praise the Lord!! We today recall our Lord's words:

KJV Matthew 21:16 And said unto him, Hearest thou what these say? And Jesus saith unto them, Yea; have ye never read, Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings thou hast perfected praise?

KJV Matthew 11:25 At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes.

I wish to continue to develop the theme/prayer which has been chosen for the upcoming annual convention of the Apostolic Lutheran Church this summer in Kingston and St. Cloud, Minnesota: "Lord, Bind Us Together In Love." May this be the deepest desire of our soul, may it be as the breath of our lungs, may it come before Our Father heaven as a sweet odor of praise to Him.... Yes, our desire is that we would be bound together in love, but the question is: How does that happen? That is what we wish to pursue through this study of prayer.

So, recognizing that prayer is both speaking and listening, and also being very well aware that the latter aspect of prayer is much more difficult to master than the first, I thought that it would be wise to observe the life of our Lord concerning His prayer life. Jesus is our Savior, our Lord, but He is also our example and pattern. We are called to learn of Him from Him. (Matthew 11:29) Here I might interject this: In my former life as a contract logger, on occasion I would visit competitors sites to see how they were doing things, visiting many sites in the process, but careful to make sure I included the most successful operations as well. Through observation I was able to see a common way of doing things and therefore was able to not only learn from them, but was able to utilize those methods that were seen to be productive to our operation's benefit. Well, in a sense, can we not approach a study of prayer in the same manner?

There are at least 27 prayers which were prayed by Jesus. Here are first two.

1. Praying prior to Bethlehem (Hebrews 10:5,7) (In the halls of eternity past)

KJV Hebrews 10:5 Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me:
KJV Hebrews 10:7 Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me,) to do thy will, O God.

2. Praying at His baptism (Luke 3:21,22)

KJV Luke 3:21 Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened,
KJV Luke 3:22 And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.

May the Lord bless our study as we "drive through the Bible to see when, where and why Jesus prayed." As we consider each of these occasions of our Lord's praying, let us ask ourselves those three questions.

In Christ,

Lord, Bind Us Together in Love 2/04/2009
Lord, Bind Us Together in Love!

John 17:20 Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;
21 That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.
22 And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one:
23 I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.
24 Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world.
25 O righteous Father, the world hath not known thee: but I have known thee, and these have known that thou hast sent me.
26 And I have declared unto them thy name, and will declare it: that the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them.

This summer it will be our great privilege to serve the body of Christ as it is lived out among us that are associated with our beloved Apostolic Lutheran Church of America. As a congregation we have been led to have as our theme for our annual convention the following statement:

Lord, bind us together in love! I

n addition to the scripture verses above, John 13:35 is also a verse on which this theme prayer has been founded. I say, prayer instead of saying, slogan or whatever, for it is indeed a prayer of our hearts that we would be bound together in love.

As the Lord prays for us, and as we pray for one another, may this love from Him burn brighter in our understanding, in our experience and in our extension of it unto others.

John 17:21 is part of what is commonly called “The High Priestly Prayer” and which was the expression of our Savior’s heart as he prayed for Himself, (verses 1-8) for his disciples (verses 9-19)and for all future disciples, including you and me. (20-26) He prayed this prayer just before He was betrayed by one of his own, Judas Iscariot.

Let us have this prayer on our hearts continually as we continue to serve one another.

In Christ,
