Wait on the LORD: be of good courage,
and he shall strengthen thine heart;
wait, I say, on the LORD.

The creation of marriage 10/07/2012
Dear friends, prayerfully today, we are going to share from the beginning of the Bible, from the book of Genesis, from Genesis 1:1 through Genesis 2:25. We might liken this unto a Sunday School lesson as it this account is familir to near all people. Today we want to think about the wonderful institution of marriage, the covenant of marriage that God created for all humanity's blessing and benefit. To properly understand marriage, it is necessary to begin at the beginning......

KJV Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.
4 And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.
5 And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.

6 And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.
7 And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so.
8 And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day.

9 And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so.
10 And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas: and God saw that it was good.
11 And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so.
12 And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good.
13 And the evening and the morning were the third day.

14 And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:
15 And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so.
16 And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.
17 And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth,
18 And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good.
19 And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.

All this was done so that we could mark and tell time. Now creation moves to a different aspect, the aspect of Life!!

What happened when God made life? This book is very much dedicated to the aspect of reproduction, and He blesses reproduction. All life that God has created is intended to reproduce and it all works very well, for He has made all life to reproduce. Trees and animals. Trees reproduce apples, animals reproduce!!

20 And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven.
21 And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good.
22 And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth.
23 And the evening and the morning were the fifth day.

24 And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so.
25 And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good.
26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
The human here is reflected as in the image (likeness) of God.

The animals cannot talk, they are bent on survival. Animals are not wired to have a conversation with us. The human being is a reflection of God, God can converse with the human being, we can look face to face with God. No other being can operate as a reflection of God. He made us to be reflective, and He made us as male and female. The male and the female reproduce, which is divine. The union of sexual intercourse is divine and ultimately it is worship. From the male and the female come beings that are in the image of God. When we reproduce, we are reproduceing the image of God, we are creating life. And this life has oversight over the rest of life. These little overseers are brought into being to have oversight over the lesser creations.

28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.
29 And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.

We eat the fruit, throw out the pit. The fruit is protecting the fruit so that the reproduction will continue in the future. Of course we cannot eat the pit, for that would be pretty hard, but yet the pit is what brings forth the next peach tree. We are given these things, the fruit, so that we will enjoy life and the pit, so that future generations will enjoy life from God.

30 And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so.
31 And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.

We are now going to skip to the 18th verse of the 2nd chapter and pick up the account where Eve was created.

Genesis 2:18 And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him

This is the only not good thing that is spoken of here, He does not say it is evil, but that it is not good. Something is missing here, so He made woman as a co-sustainer, for they will function together, from them will come life, the cycle of life, co-sustainers of human life. They are put together as human in oneness.

19 And out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof.
20 And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found an help meet for him.

God brought all the animals before Adam, but there was not found a co-sustainer found in them. Adam could not find a co sustainer among all the animals, even tho he could find a helper. No one but the female could complete the male and become the human. The human named all the animals and then God acted.

21 And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof;
22 And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man.

God made woman so that she and man would fit together. He buildther and fashioned her into a woman. He brought her unto the man. He presented her to the man, even as the father of the bride brings his daughter to her husband to be. God is the first presenter of the woman to the man, so that together they will be co-sustainers.

23 And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.
Adam is quoted as he speaks for the first time being that there is someone to talk to.

24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave (be united) unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.
25 And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.

A man shall leave his father and mother and shall be joined, united, married, wedded..A man is done with his father and mother, and he goes to his wife and he is joined to her, for she is a co-sustainer. And when the two are joined because their plumbing fits, they become one flesh and one being. They are one, even though they are separate, when they are joined together in the union, there are more of them created. It it not good that male is alone, God is telling them that for the males it was not good to be alone, for they need to have a cosustainer, for this is the way that God wants it.

Now there is an important thing. There is no shame in this ideal state, they are naked and not ashamed.

1. God saw that it was not good for man to be alone, therefore He created woman as one that is suitable for man, or corresponding to, 2:18

2. None of the animals were suitable to be co sustainers of man. 2:20

3. God created woman out of man 2:21

4. God brought woman to man 2:22

5. Adam affirmed by speaking that woman was created out of man 2:23

6. In marriage a man leaves his parents and is to be joined unto his wife so that they become one 2:24

7. Within this union of oneness in marriage, there is no shame, but shared openness, honesty, and pleasure.

Marriage is one life is shared together to the point that there is only one life. That is what it means to become one flesh, ie to share one life experience together. All that I am and all that I have belong to you.

It is not that when we get married that we become one flesh, but it is a promise that we are making, a moral duty that we are taking on. It is an ongoing experience that we work on and as we yield to true love, we will come closer together as we grow in our marriage. As hard as marriage can be, yet it is rewarding because we what we are promising to one another meets our deepest needs. No other human will be as important to us as our spouse.

Sexuality is a natural language which communicates to another that I am making a commitment to another by sharing of one's most intimate part of ones body. Hooking up (casual sex) or having sexual intercourse outside of marriage is lying to another because we are using them for personal gain.

Sexual relationships have boundaries that must be kept within the marriage. We are made with a powerful built in desire that must be kept within bounds as God has set them and, He has done for our protection and blessing.

Lastly, but briefly, we share the words that Apostle Paul wrote to the Ephesians, which concern the relationship between husband and wife and Christ and the church. There would be much much to be said about this, as well as of the emphasis in the Old Testament that God was the husband of His people (see verse below) and they were the bride. Sticking to the New Testament, we know that Christ is the bridegroom and that we are the bride and with the following verses we come to the close of this meditation in His Word.

Isaiah 54;5 For thy Maker is thine husband; the LORD of hosts is his name; and thy Redeemer the Holy One of Israel; The God of the whole earth shall he be called.

Ephesians 5:31 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.
32 This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.
33 Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.

May He bless our meditations in His Word this day and always....

Together in Christ,
