Wait on the LORD: be of good courage,
and he shall strengthen thine heart;
wait, I say, on the LORD.

The Vine and the branches 5.3.2015
Grace mercy and peace from God our Father and our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ be with you now and always, Amen.

KJV John 15:1 I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman.
2 Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.
3 Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.
4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.
5 I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.
6 If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.
7 If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.
8 Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.
9 As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love.
10 If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love.
11 These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.
12 This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.
13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
14 Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.
15 Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.
16 Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.

As parents we are instructed to raise our children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord with the goal that one day they will become reliant on the Holy Spirit of God, who assure them, will guide them, correct them, will comfort them and will inspire them. As parents the responsibility to train and to teach requires that the boundaries of the relationship between parent and child be kept in tact. The parent is the parent and the child is the child. And a critical part of keeping this relationship intact is that during the course of the childrearing years the parent strives to keep in the forefront that we as parents are "for" our child. And therefore it is hoped that all our efforts to train and teach are children will bring our child towards the understanding and knowledge that their God is for them.

As Jesus neared the laying down of His life for the sins of the world, He spent a considerable amount of time preparing them for what was ahead for them, after He had been taken away in the physical sense. From chapters 13-17 He demonstrates to them humility, speaks to them of the betrayal by one of the twelve, Judas, tells them that love is the evidence of their discipleship and then speaks to them of how He will return to dwell with them forever through the Holy Spirit.

Throught out these chapters we are able to sense the great love that He had for the seed of the early church of believers, who would begin to spread the Good News of the Gospel after the Day of Pentecost. Let us refresh our memories as to how He spoke to them in love, about the Holy Spirit and about the peace that He was leaving with them and which He so desired that they would truly know and live in.

KJV John 13:1 Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end.

KJV John 14:16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;

KJV John 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

KJV John 14:27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

14:30 I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming. He has no claim on me,
31 but I do as the Father has commanded me, so that the world may know that I love the Father. Rise, let us go from here.

Have you ever had the experience of giving some counsel to a child in a certain situation and when you thought you were done, you had the feeling that there was more to say. This is how it seems it was as Jesus is giving His disciples counsel, and as they were just about to go, he kind of said, one thing more, and then spoke for three more chapters of assurance, encouragement and direction in John 15:1-16.

KJV John 15:1 I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman.
2 Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.

If one plants an apple tree, it is desired that one would recieve fruit from it and through the process of pruning the tree, the tree will be bring forth more fruit. As those who are in Christ through by grace through faith, He desire that we would grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ.
The vine is not able to do its work in the world without its branches; they stretch far from the root. We need the Lord Jesus, but He also needs us. Without us He cannot bless men as He would. Service to God and man is possible only through abiding union in Him. Let us yield ourselves to be pruned by the Word, that we may not need the pruning of awful sorrows. It is said that three out of five of the vine-berries are cut off that the remainder may attain their full size.
3 Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.

Ephesians 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.
10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

As saints justified by faith through the Word, we are called to continue in Him as He will in us, for outside of this continuance, we can do nothing. He is the vine, we are the branches and He needs us to continue in that proper place if we are going to bring fruit forth.

He know moves from contininuing in Him to continuing in His Word, for there is no separation between abiding in Christ and abiding in His Word.

May our minds and hearts grasp the impact of the love of Jesus as He looked on his beloved disciples who were in fear, sensing that they were losing their teacher, inspite of the teachings of what He had given them earlier. May we receive the same assurance, encouragement and hope that He wanted to leave with them. He tells them that they will move from being a servant to a friend, which means that they will be connected by the Spirit and that all the He has heard of the Father He will make known unto them. They are no longer working for him, but now they are working with Him in union with Father and the Spirit.

Lastly He tells them that whatever they have need of when they are in this unity of purpose, they only need ask since living within this union they will only ask for those things that they know are consistent with the desires and purposes of God. They will not ask for things that are self oriented or self serving, but will by the grace of the Spirit look for those things that will enlarge the kingdom of God. May we understand what this means for us who are in his kingdom today. Whatever we have need of that is consistent with the desires and purposes of God, we only have to ask. Oh, Lord, help us to see what this means for us in our lives today and in the lives of our children, grandchildren and so on.

Lord, open our hearts and minds as to how much you are for us and desire to grow us in our ability to be a colaborer with you as you desire to pour your grace out into this world.

In Christ,
