Wait on the LORD: be of good courage,
and he shall strengthen thine heart;
wait, I say, on the LORD.

Our Father's Heart 11.8.2015
Dear friend,

May the love of Our Father in heaven, the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you today and always!

As we continue asking the Lord to teach us to pray, we may find ourselves having many thoughts as to how He might do that which we are asking of Him. In the Word through which He will speak with us this Sunday, we are instructed to pray the prayer He gave us, we are to be persistent in our asking, seeking and knocking and we are to ask especially for the Holy Spirit. (Luke 11:1-13) We readily understand this instruction which we need on a regular basis, because prayer is the most difficult discipline for most of us to master. Many deeply devoted Christians have given account of how prayer has been the most difficult spiritual discipline for them, but yet it has been the avenue through which they have been drawn closer to the heart of Our Father in heaven. They have testified that they never quite mastered the art, but have witnessed of the importance of being persistent in seeking the presence of the Triune God in communion and fellowship in Him. As we seek to get to know our Father, we begin to get the sense that when He tells us that we are to be praying for the Holy Spirit, He is telling us that He wants to give us Himself.

The Apostle of love, John, who referred to himself as the one whom the Lord loved ,began his first epistle with words that should help us grasp just what it is that the Lord wants to give to us in response to our request:

KJV 1 John 1:1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life;
2 (For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;)
3 That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.
4 And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full.

We have a Father in heaven who loves us, has redeemed us and will never leave us. May we understand what this truly means as we humbly "ask Our Lord to teach us to pray." He more than anything wants us to experience the joy that comes as a result of our being in fellowship and communion with/in Him.

Sometimes the question is asked about whether God was viewed as a Father in the Old Testament or did He just become a Father when Jesus came to earth. Well, let's think about it by taking a fly over the scriptures and looking at the entire history of the Bible.

KJV Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
KJV Genesis 1:27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
KJV Genesis 3:15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

KJV Isaiah 63:16 Doubtless thou art our father, though Abraham be ignorant of us, and Israel acknowledge us not: thou, O LORD, art our father, our redeemer; thy name is from everlasting.

KJV Hosea 11:1 When Israel was a child, then I loved him, and called my son out of Egypt.

KJV Matthew 2:15 And was there until the death of Herod: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son.

In these verses that I listed, we are able to see that He is the One who gave us life, but we separated ourselves from Him through sin and death. He came for us, came to be with us and is now in us. He loves us, He redeemed us and He will never leave us. These are monumental truths which we must hang our entire existence upon.

He has decided for us from the beginning because He loves us.

1 Peter 1:18 Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers;
19 But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:
20 Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you,
21 Who by him do believe in God, that raised him up from the dead, and gave him glory; that your faith and hope might be in God.

He came to be with us in the flesh as the God-Man in Jesus Christ, His Son.

Matthew 1:21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.
22 Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying,
23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.

He now lives in the collective body of believers in Jesus Christ.

John 14:16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;

Ephesians 2:18 For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father.
19 Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God;
20 And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;
21 In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord:
22 In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.

May we seek to get to know and experience our Father's heart towards us to the end that we would have His heart towards our families, towards our congregational families, towards those who are fatherless, and especially the children of our congregation. I have prepared a list of those who are either directly or loosely connected with our congregation. Many of these children live in father deficient circumstances. Lord, show us how to be fathers and mothers..............May your Spirit stir and provoke us to action............
