Wait on the LORD: be of good courage,
and he shall strengthen thine heart;
wait, I say, on the LORD.

The Glory of God 10.29.2017
Dear friend,

The Scriptures tell us that God is love, He demonstrated that love by sending His Son to atone for our sins, and upon coming to know and experience that it was done for us/me personally, He transforms us into one in whom this same love dwells and flows from. Because He loved us, we love one another, and so therefore our greatest desire is that those around us would know and experience God and His love.

John 17:20 Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;
21 That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.
22 And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one:
23 I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.
24 Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world.
25 O righteous Father, the world hath not known thee: but I have known thee, and these have known that thou hast sent me.
26 And I have declared unto them thy name, and will declare it: that the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them.

Just before He offered Himself in our place, Jesus prayed on behalf of Himself, of the disciples that were with Him and for all future disciples/followers of His. He prayed that we all would experience in greater measure that love that was between them in the Trinity.

John the Apostle of love origination and the evidence of the love of God in his first letter.

1 John 4:8 Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.
9 In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him.
10 In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.
12 No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us.

The Apostle Paul explained in further detail what this looks like in everyday life.

1 Corinthians 13:4 Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant
5 or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful;
6 it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth.
7 Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
8 Love never ends

Knowing the origination of love and experiencing it effects through the cross and resurrection of Christ are absolutely foundational to our being able to live in both the forgiveness of all our sins and in the newness of life wherein we live in the inspiration and the power of the Holy Spirit.

C.S. Lewis, a theologian during WWII has an amazing ability to express things of God in everyday language so that we could grasp the significance of what it means to live in love, peace and joy. He made this statement that helps us understand of why we do not experience more joy in our Christian life.

‚€œIt would seem that Our Lord finds our desires not too strong, but too weak. We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased.‚€Ě

He then makes another statement which speaks to our subject today, a reading which was read last night at the wedding of Chad and Brenda.

‚€œTo love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything and your heart will be wrung and possibly broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact you must give it to no one, not even an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements. Lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket, safe, dark, motionless, airless, it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable. To love is to be vulnerable.‚€Ě

How open are we willing to be? Last year a number of us attended a series of videos entitled ‚€œExperiencing God‚€™s Dream for your marriage.‚€Ě In one of the sessions we learned again that there are five levels of communication.

Level 1 Cliché Conversations Safe, Shallow, Polite

Level 2 Reporting Facts Speaking in the 3rd person

Level 3 Ideas or Judgments Risk begins here, Attachment of self with facts.

Level 4 Feelings and Emotions Laying self on the line

Level 5 Open Communication Total Honesty, mutual
With understanding

We are having our next Art of Marriage video this coming Sunday night at 5:00 p.m. which is entitled ‚€œLove Fades‚€Ě and it speaks to the tendency for relationships to drift apart, why it occurs and explores avenues
by which love might again flourish

Ephesians 3:20 Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us,
21 to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.
